DOCTOR IVAN ZAITSEV'S ARCHIVAL INVESTIGATIVE CASE MATERIALS AS A SOURCE FOR STUDYING SOVIET LIFE OF THE MID-1930S IN THE UKRAINIAN SOCIALIST SOVIET REPUBLIC

Abstract. The article reconstructs several episodes from the life and activities of Ivan Zaitsev, a doctor of the Olevsky border detachment in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, related to the events surrounding his arrest, investigation and conviction on the charge of conducting anti-Soviet counter-revolutionary activities through «preaching the ideas of Trotskyism». The object of the study was the archival-investigative file of I. Zaitsev, which contains a «standard» list of documents (protocols of his interrogations, testimony of I. Zaitsev's colleagues, etc.). The conducted analysis of the materials of the archival-investigative case of I. Zaitsev allows us to state that after imprisoning I. Zaitsev, the Soviet authorities at the same time remained as loyal as possible to him, because he was one of those representatives of the Soviet «intelligentsia», who were in fact an integral part of the totalitarian Soviet system and were used by it by profession – in this case as a doctor in the place of their imprisonment. In this case, the selectivity of the Soviet «judiciary» of the Stalin era was shown as a drop in the bucket, as well as the fact that even receiving a prison term for Russians, as a rule, did not take them out of the framework of the totalitarian system, but rather on the contrary – tied them even more firmly to it.
